Tips from the National Day of Listening Guidebook

Couple talking.jpgPerhaps you missed it over the holidays, but recently NPR and StoryCorp held the second annual National Day of Listening, during which Americans were encouraged to record and share an interview with a loved one and to preserve that conversation for future generations.

Here are some tips from the National Day of Listening Guidebook – and Dulye & Co. – to help you get started:

  • Select a person to talk to and schedule time to talk – without interruptions. It’s difficult to find a place where we can’t be called, emailed, text-messaged, but you can do it. Select a park, a back porch or a kitchen table and shut off the phones and gadgets and you’ll be on your way.
  • Develop some questions to get the conversation rolling. StoryCorp recommends these:
    • What are some of the most important lessons you have learned in life?
    • What are you most proud of?
    • What was the happiest moment of your life?
    • The saddest?
    • Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
    • What lessons did they teach you?
    • How would you like to be remembered?
  • Consider asking questions about the person’s work life, such as:
    • How did you find your line of work? What drew you to it?
    • What lessons has your work life taught you?
    • What are your favorite stories about your time at work?

Next, share what you learned. Look for opportunities to share with others at work and in your personal life what inspired you about this person – and what might inspire them to know the person. Use the stories you heard as way to inspire your work team or to illustrate a point.

And most important, remember that engaged listening should happen more than once a year. It should be a way of life.
